Heinrich Widmann OSB (born November 13, 1689 in Straubing ; † October 14, 1758 in Mallersdorf ) was a German Benedictine , abbot in Mallersdorf Abbey and professor of philosophy at the University of Erfurt .

biography

Heinrich Widmann made his profession on October 28, 1710 in Mallersdorf Monastery and received his philosophical and theological training under Johannes Evangelist Rottner. After being ordained a priest in 1714, he was initially employed in pastoral care in the churches supervised by the monastery. During this time he was already making a name for himself as an excellent preacher. He was then given offices in the monastery before he took over the position of director of the seminary for noble youth in the Regensburg Schottenabtei Sankt Jakob .

In 1723 he received the extraordinary professorship for philosophy at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Erfurt and in 1726 the second full professorship for philosophy (morality) and was also dean of the faculty. The activity in Erfurt was probably owed to the Regensburg Schottenkloster, which was connected to the university via the Schottenkloster there and sent monks to study philosophy and theology and to take on professorships at the Philosophical Faculty in Erfurt. Like his predecessor from the Regensburg Schottenkloster, Heinrich Widmann also gave his public lectures in the auditorium of the Erfurt Schottenkloster.

When Heinrich Widmann returned to Mallersdorf in 1728, he took over the office of prior in the monastery . On August 5, 1732, he was finally elected abbot of Mallersdorf Abbey. During his term of office, the baroque redesign of the monastery church and the expansion of the monastery buildings took place. During this time, Mallersdorf Monastery housed the joint novitiate and study of the Bavarian Benedictine Congregation . Abbot Heinrich Widmann held the office of visitor in the congregation.

Abbot Heinrich Widmann died on October 14, 1758 of the consequences of a serious fall that had already occurred in April. The eulogy and funeral speech for the deceased, which was published in Regensburg, was held by Abbot Petrus Gerl from the monastery checking , who, like Heinrich Widmann, came from Straubing.
