Heinrich Winter (mathematician)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heinrich Winand Winter (born July 20, 1928 in Buttlar , Thuringia ; † March 6, 2017 ) was a German math teacher who was a professor at RWTH Aachen University .

Life

Winter completed his training as a primary school teacher in Eisenach in 1945/46 and taught at the elementary school in Bremen (Geisa) until 1950 . Then he made up his Abitur in Erfurt , was a primary school teacher in Geisa before moving to Aachen in 1952, where he studied at the Pedagogical Academy. From 1953 he taught at an elementary school in Aachen, while at the same time taking the examination as a secondary school teacher and studying for teaching at grammar schools at the RWTH Aachen. During this time he was a student of Ewald Fettweis in Aachen (one of whose successors he would later become in Aachen). From 1960 he was trainee lawyer and study assessor at a grammar school in Aachen and from 1962/63 assistant at the seminar for mathematics didactics at the Pedagogical University of Neuss (today part of the University of Düsseldorf). In 1963 he received his PhD in geography from RWTH Aachen University. rer. nat. PhD. From 1963 to 1969 he was a lecturer in mathematics education at the PH Rheinland in Neuss and from 1969 to 1973 professor at the PH Ruhr in Dortmund. In 1978 he became a professor at the PH Rhineland in Aachen, which has belonged to RWTH Aachen University since 1980. In 1986 he moved to the mathematics faculty and in 1993 he retired. Winter died in March 2017 and found his final resting place in the Holy Sepulcher St. Josef in Aachen.

He coined the term discovering learning in mathematics lessons, which is also the title of his main work, and was of great influence on the mathematics curricula in German schools, for example by formulating general learning goals. Winter played a major role in the mathematics curriculum for elementary schools in North Rhine-Westphalia (1985).

The basic Winters experiences

According to Heinrich Winter, mathematics lessons should aim to contribute to general education by enabling three basic experiences:

  • (G1) "Appearances of the world around us, which concern or should concern us all, from nature, society and culture, in a specific way to perceive and understand,"
  • (G2) »to get to know and understand mathematical objects and facts, represented in language, symbols, images and formulas, as intellectual creations, as a deductively ordered world of its own kind and«
  • (G3) » to acquire problem-solving skills that go beyond mathematics when dealing with tasks ( heuristic skills)."

These are the so-called Winters basic experiences , which are currently (2015) counted among the most important theses in didactics of mathematics.

Memberships, editorship and honors

In 1983 he was the founding editor of the magazine mathematik lehren , from 1983 to 1987 chairman of the Society for Didactics of Mathematics (GDM), of which he is an honorary member. In 1988 he was awarded the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia . In 2005 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Dortmund .
