from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heinrich Zollinger (born November 29, 1919 in Aarau ; † July 10, 2005 ) was a Swiss chemist who dealt with dyes.

biography

He was the son of a medical professor, attended the cantonal secondary school in Zurich (Matura 1939) and from 1939 studied chemistry at the ETH Zurich with his doctorate in 1944 under Hans Eduard Fierz-David ( contributions to the representation and polymerization of vinyl chloride ), whose lecture assistant he was . Between 1945 and 1960 Zollinger worked in dye chemistry at Ciba AG in Basel. In 1951/52 he was studying at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology . He completed his habilitation in Basel in 1951 and was then a private lecturer there. In 1960 he became professor for organic-technical chemistry at the ETH Zurich (first assistant professor, 1962 associate professor and full professor from 1967). From 1973 to 1977 he was rector of the ETH Zurich, and in 1987 Zollinger retired. He has been visiting professor in the USA and Israel several times.

He dealt mainly with azo dyes , textile dyeing and finishing and developed a simple dyeing method for polyacrylonitrile fibers (1952).

In 1970 he received the Conrad Prize for Textile Chemistry, he was an honorary doctorate from the University of Stuttgart (1977) and the Tokyo University of Technology, and received the Order of the Rising Sun in Japan .

From 1977 to 1979 he was on the Board of Trustees of the Swiss National Science Foundation and from 1980 to 1982 President of the International Union for Pure and Applied Chemistry. In 1984 he was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences .

In 1948 he married Heidi Frick, with whom he had three sons (one of whom is the cultural engineer Fritz Zollinger ).

In his youth he was an enthusiastic boy scout and from December 1941 to August 1942 he was head field master of the scout department in Flamberg in Zurich.
