Hans Eduard Fierz ( alliance name Hans Eduard Fierz-David ; born January 5, 1882 in Riesbach , † August 25, 1953 in Zurich ) was a Swiss chemist .

Live and act

Hans Eduard Fierz attended schools in Zurich and graduated from the industrial school . He then studied chemistry at the Eidgenössisches Polytechnikum Zürich and received his diploma as a technical chemist in 1904 . In 1905 he was at Alfred Werner with the work to knowledge of the isomeric Campherylharnstoffe and [alpha] -Camphylharnstoff Dr. phil. PhD . He completed further training with Martin Onslow Forster at the Royal College of Science in London , worked for the Mond Nickel Co. in South Wales and in a brewery in Munich . From 1909 to 1917 he worked as a chemist at JR Geigy AG in Basel . In 1917 he was appointed to the chair for organic chemical technology at the ETH Zurich . In 1952 he retired . From 1934 to 1936 he was President of the Natural Research Society in Zurich .

In his research work, Hans Eduard Fierz dealt primarily with color chemistry, with artificial organic dyes and their starting and intermediate products, with textile chemistry and, in collaboration with Werner Jadassohn, with biochemistry . Heinrich Zollinger and Edgar Heilbronner were his students.

Hans Eduard Fierz was married to Linda David (1891–1955), daughter of Heinrich David , from 1911 and also used the alliance name Hans Eduard Fierz-David . He was a close friend of Carl Gustav Jung . The physicist Markus Fierz was one of his sons, his twin brother Heinrich Karl Fierz worked as a psychiatrist in the Binswanger Clinic in Kreuzlingen .
