Heinrich of Mechelen
Heinrich ( Bate or Baten ) [and / or] von Mecheln (also: Henricus Bate , Heinrich Bate de Malines , Henricus Batenus Mechliniensis , Henry Bate ; * March 24, 1246 , † after 1310) was a philosopher, translator and astronomer.
Life
Heinrich was trained in Paris and received his master's degree before 1274. He was a student of Thomas Aquinas , perhaps also of Albertus Magnus . He took part in the 2nd Council of Lyon . In Liège he was canon and cantor of the cathedral before 1289 . His publications ignored the prohibitions on dealing with Averroes . He taught Guy de Hainaut , the brother of Johann von Avesnes , for whom he wrote his main work, Speculum divinorum et quorundam naturalium (mirror of divine things and some natural things) from 1285-1305 . Around 1309 he retired to Tongerlo Abbey , where he ended his life.
