Heinrich "Heinz" Bello (born September 5, 1920 in Breslau ; † June 29, 1944 in Berlin ) was a German medical student and is considered a Catholic martyr .

Life

Heinz Bello grew up in the Wesel Schillviertel ( Schillsches Freikorps ) in a Catholic environment since 1926 . He was friends with Ernst-Alfred Jauch , with whom he completed his Abitur in 1939 at the State Humanistic Gymnasium Wesel and was with him an active member of the Bund New Germany and later on in the Reich Labor Service .

During the air raid service as a student of medicine in Münster in July 1943 , he said: “The lamp posts in Münster are not enough to hang the Nazis and the detective heads on them” and - with a glance at the crucifix on the wall of the room - “As long as this Lord lives , he'll make sure that the trees don't grow into the sky! ” For these remarks he was later denounced by the medical sergeant Bernreiter and persecuted by the Nazi regime. He turned down opportunities to flee out of fear of reprisals against his family. Appeals for clemency were rejected not least because of the well-known Catholic attitude of his family. Laudetur Jesus Christ - June 29, 1944 - 7.30.” Is the last entry he made on a calendar sheet before his shooting on the same day in Berlin-Tegel.
