Life

Katschnig studied medicine at the University of Vienna , did his doctorate in 1968 and in the same year took up a position at the psychiatric-neurological clinic with Hans Hoff . 1974 to 1976 he worked in London, at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and at the Psychiatric Institute of the University of London . Hoff's successor, Peter Berner, took over after his return from England, and in 1978 Katschnig was appointed senior physician . In 1980 he obtained the Venia Legendi for psychiatry , in 1985 he was appointed associate professor, in 1991 he was head of the University Clinic for Psychiatry and head of the clinical department for social psychiatry and evaluation research .

As early as 1977, the scientist was given the founding, development and management of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Social Psychiatry in Vienna. This institute is responsible for a number of substantial research projects and was headed by Katschnig until 2014. In 1986 he became the editor of the journal Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology . In total, the scientist has developed for more than 400 scientific publications, including a number of easy-to-read practical guides for professional colleagues. Central to his work are the topics of crisis intervention and emergency psychiatry , social psychiatry and the research of health facilities, anxiety disorders , life events as a trigger for mental illness, the broad spectrum of schizophrenia and the support of relatives , as well as the connection between quality of life and mental health . His writings have appeared in English, Italian, Spanish, Chinese and Japanese.

Katschnig was or is editor and member of the advisory boards of several scientific journals. He represented Austria in numerous WHO and EU projects (such as MINDFUL, ITHACA, REFINEMENT, CEPHOS-LINK or DEXHELPP) and was a member of the indicator project group of WHO-EURO.

He defined six major challenges facing psychiatry today: the validity of the diagnoses and therapeutic interventions, the unexplained role model of the psychiatrist, careerism, the intrusion of other professions, and the low status of psychiatry within medicine on the one hand, and within society on the other.

Katschnig is married to the pediatrician and psychotherapist Hildegard Katschnig and has three grown children.
