Heinz Markstein
Heinz Markstein ( pseudonyms Josef Heimar , Jan Melnik ; born April 9, 1924 in Vienna ; † June 22, 2008 Vienna) was an Austrian journalist and writer.
Life
Markstein came from a family of assimilated Jews. His father and uncle were imprisoned as socialists in the Buchenwald concentration camp . After they were released, the family emigrated to Bolivia in March 1939 . In La Paz , Markstein was a leading member of the "Movement for a Free Austria". In 1945 the family went to Argentina. In 1951 Markstein returned to Vienna. He initially worked as a freelancer for Radio Vienna and was the editor of Volksstimme . From 1962 to 1963 he worked as a foreign correspondent in Prague . In the Volksstimme he was dismissed after he left the Communist Party of Austria . From 1970 he worked as a writer and freelance journalist. He wrote reports and commentaries for magazines, radio features for the ORF , radio plays and television games for children.
Markstein was married to the Slavist, translator and author Elisabeth Markstein , with whom he had three daughters.
