Heinz Schifferdecker

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heinz Schifferdecker (born July 13, 1889 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein , † January 25, 1924 in Mannheim ) was a German painter.

Life

The son of a master painter first completed an apprenticeship in his father's company. Then he went to Karlsruhe and became a student of the church painter Joseph Himmel, from whom he learned decorative painting. Filled with the desire to study art, he successfully applied against his father's will to the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe, where he studied with Eichhorn, Berberuth and Koch between 1908 and 1912. Since he was not supported by his parents, he earned his living as a poster and decorative painter. In 1915 he was used as a soldier in Flanders during the First World War . In 1916 he took part in the Poland campaign, where he was wounded and lost an eye. After his recovery, he set up a studio in the right wing of Mannheim Palace , where he worked until his untimely death in 1924.

In the beginning, Heinz Schifferdecker's work was determined by decorative approaches. The art historian Clemens Jöckle notes that under the impression of the events of the First World War, the artist's painting increased to internal drama from 1917, "only to become powerful and lyrical at the same time in the last three years between 1921 and 1923". In addition to nudes, portraits and still lifes, there are mainly landscape pictures showing motifs from the Odenwald and from the edge of the hair. Stylistically, Heinz Schifferdecker moved in the area of Impressionism , based on Max Slevogt and Lovis Corinth . The landscapes of the last years of life are compared in the literature with the late work of Wilhelm Trübner . Heinz Schifferdecker's work is mentioned in the same breath as the work of the famous “painter princes” of the Palatinate, such as Otto Dill or Albert Haueisen . Clemens Jöckle comes to the conclusion that because of his untimely death the artist was not allowed to “get the place in art history that he deserves”.
