Heinzwerner Preuß (born September 12, 1925 in Liegnitz ; † October 29, 2016 in Stuttgart ) was a German physicist and theoretical chemist who mainly deals with quantum chemistry. He was the founder and director of the Institute for Theoretical Chemistry at the University of Stuttgart .

Preuß studied mathematics from 1945 onwards at the University of Halle and after completing his intermediate diploma in 1948 at the University of Hamburg with a diploma in 1951 and a doctorate under Wilhelm Lenz in 1954. From 1952 he built a research group in quantum chemistry at the Max Planck Institute for Physics in Göttingen settled in Munich after the institute moved in 1959. In 1958/59 he was with the quantum chemist Per-Olov Löwdin in Uppsala and in 1961 he completed his habilitation with the physical chemist Hermann Hartmann in Frankfurt am Main . In 1969 he became director of the newly founded Institute for Theoretical Chemistry at the University of Stuttgart, which he remained until his retirement in 1993.

Preuss was one of the pioneers of quantum chemistry in Germany after the war. He has published over 200 academic papers and several monographs and introductory textbooks. 1956 to 1961 he published integral tables for quantum chemistry.
