Helen Ruth Saibil (born August 12, 1950 ) is a Canadian-British molecular biologist .

Life

After studying at McGill University in Montreal , Helen Saibil went to King's College London , where she received her Ph.D. - Graduated. She was then a postdoctoral fellow in Grenoble and a research assistant and research associate at King's College before moving to the University of Oxford in 1984 . In 1996 and 1997 her research was funded by the Wellcome Trust . From 2007 to 2008 she spent two sabbatical years at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg . She is Bernal Professor of Structural Biology at Birkbeck College in London.

The main research focus of Helen Saibil's work is the chaperone proteins and the investigation of their role in correct protein folding , but also the investigation of protein misfolding diseases and especially amyloidosis , which can lead to chronic diseases. Her work, carried out with the help of cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) and modern image processing methods, has contributed significantly to elucidating the mechanism of protein folding mediated by chaperones.

In 2001 she became an elected member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO). In 2006 she was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society . In 2015 she was accepted as a full member of the Academia Europaea . She is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Microscopical Society and the British Biophysical Society. She is an honorary doctorate from the University of Helsinki .
