Helena Ferro de Gouveia

Helena Ferro de Gouveia (* 1971 in Bissau , Portuguese Guinea ) is a Portuguese journalist, lecturer and author.

Life

Helena Ferro de Gouveia was born in the capital of the Portuguese colony of Portuguese Guinea, now Guinea-Bissau . Her father came from a small Portuguese village in the remote region of Trás-os-Montes .

After Guinea-Bissau gained independence in 1974, she came to Lisbon with her parents , where she grew up. After graduating from high school, she studied communication science at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa , after which she completed a postgraduate degree in communication law at the law faculty of the University of Coimbra .

From 1996 she started her journalistic activity. Since then she has been writing for a variety of Portuguese newspapers, including the daily Público , the weekly Sol , and the business paper Jornal de Negócios .

She has been part of the Portuguese-language editorial team at Deutsche Welle since 2006 and is a lecturer and trainer at DW Akademie . She is also often invited as an expert, for example on the topic of the Brazilian media landscape, or in scientific discussions on refugee issues. She also held a visiting professorship in journalism at the Universidade Nova in Lisbon.

In the course of her work, she reported as a journalist a. a. from Malaysia, Egypt, East Timor, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, the USA and Israel. As a lecturer at Deutsche Welle, she also taught journalism and lectured on peace journalism, war trauma, political journalism, journalism in crisis areas and business journalism, etc. a. in countries like South Sudan, Namibia, Guinea-Bissau, Brazil and Mozambique.

In 2015, her first book Domadora de Camaleões (German: Chamäleon - Tompteurin ), a collection of chronicles, short stories and poems, was published by the Dortmund Post's Oxalá publishing house (2nd edition 2016). Some of the posts are from her personal blog.

Helena Ferro de Gouveia is the mother of two daughters and lives in Bonn and Lisbon .
