The Portuguese-South Sudanese relations describe the intergovernmental relationship between Portugal and South Sudan . The countries have had direct diplomatic relations since 2011.

In view of the persistent domestic political problems in South Sudan, bilateral relations between the two countries are only weak. Portugal is involved in aid projects in South Sudan.

The Darfur conflict was also widely reported in Portugal, and the peace agreement of 2005 and the independence referendum in South Sudan in 2011 were also the subject of media coverage in Portugal.

Portugal immediately recognized the independence of South Sudan, which was proclaimed on July 9, 2011. After that, the persistently difficult situation in South Sudan was a frequent topic in the Portuguese media. In November, the Portuguese TV presenter and actress Catarina Furtado toured the country in her role as UN special envoy for the United Nations Population Fund . She then reported on her diverse, often terrifying impressions on Portuguese television.

Portuguese journalists, such as Helena Ferro de Gouveia , who lives in Germany and who also mentored young journalists in South Sudan , have repeatedly reported on the ongoing civil war in South Sudan since 2013 .

diplomacy

Portugal does not have its own embassy in South Sudan, the country belongs to the administrative district of the Portuguese ambassador in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa . There are also no Portuguese consulates in South Sudan.

South Sudan also does not have its own representation in Portugal; the South Sudanese representation in the French capital Paris is responsible . There are also no consulates of South Sudan in Portugal.

economy

There is currently no official trade between Portugal and South Sudan (as of the end of 2016). The Portuguese Chamber of Commerce AICEP shows in its statistics figures for all countries around the world with which Portugal does trade, without giving figures for South Sudan. The AICEP contact point in the Portuguese embassy in Ethiopia is responsible.
