Helena of Serbia

Helena of Serbia (Serbian Jelena , Hungarian Ilona ; * 1109 , † 1146 ) was Queen of Hungary.

Helena was the daughter of the Serbian prince I. Uroš and his wife Anna, a niece of the Byzantine Emperor Alexius I was born. On April 28, 1127, at the age of 16, she married the later Hungarian King Béla II of the House of the Arpad . The couple had six children, with three sons succeeding their father as Hungarian kings. Since Béla was blind, he was completely dependent on those around him and his advisers in exercising power. Queen Helena also played a crucial role here. Béla died in 1141, Queen Helena survived him by five years and was buried at his side in the Basilica of St. Stephen of Székesfehérvár .
