The Helena medal (also Helena medal or Saint Helena medal , Fri Médaille de Sainte-Hélène ) is a war medal for the French military of the land and naval forces, the Emperor Napoleon III. was founded on August 12, 1857.

The occasion was the honor of those who participated in the war from the time of the fighting from 1792 to 1815. Foreigners who fought under the French flag could also receive the award.

The bronze medal is surrounded by a laurel wreath and surmounted by a crown. The obverse shows the profile of Napoleon I turned to the right and the inscription NAPOLEON EMPEREUR surrounding it . On the reverse it bears the multi-line inscription A SES COMPAGNONS DE GLOIRE SA DERNIÈRE PENSÉE S te HÉLÈNE 5 MAY 1821 , as well as CAMPAGNES DE 1792 A 1815 all around .

The award was worn on a green ribbon with three narrow red central stripes in the buttonhole or on the left side of the chest.

When the war in Italy broke out in the spring of 1859, many Germans who had received the medal returned the award.
