Helgo Magnussen

Helgo Magnussen (born June 11, 1944 in Storkow (Mark) ) is a German physician and professor of pulmonary medicine .

Life

Helgo Magnussen studied in Tübingen , initially doing research at the Max Planck Institute for Experimental Medicine in Göttingen, then at the University of Bonn , from 1977 as head of the pneumological functional unit there. He dealt intensively with lung function and, in particular, with whole-body plethysmography . In 1979 he completed his habilitation in Bonn. In 1984 he was appointed adjunct professor at the University of Hamburg .

From 1985 he headed the Center for Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery in Großhansdorf. There he set up a center for sleep medicine in the same year . In 1998 he founded the Pneumological Research Institute, which primarily examines questions about improving the diagnosis and treatment of respiratory diseases. In 2004 he was appointed to the C4 endowed professorship for internal medicine / pulmonology at the University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein, Lübeck campus, and has since led the "Pneumoupdate", an annual, national advanced training event for pulmonology. Today Magnussen heads the “Pneumology, Sleep Medicine and Allergology” department in the group practice “Medizinicum Hamburg” (until 2018: “Klinikum Stephansplatz”). Here, in an interdisciplinary team, he deals with the effects of systemic rheumatological diseases such as scleroderma on the lungs.

Helgo Magnussen dealt with numerous scientific questions in pulmonary medicine at an early age. The focus is on diseases of the respiratory tract such as bronchial asthma , chronic bronchitis ( COPD ) and diseases of the pulmonary framework ( pulmonary fibrosis ). He has published more than 400 scientific papers.

Helgo Magnussen is a great-grandson of Christian Carl Magnussen .
