Heliothela is a genus of butterflies from the family of Crambiden (Crambidae).
features
The adults have an owl-like appearance. The head has well developed ocelles . The labial palps are long and elongated, the second segment has long scales ventrally . The maxillary palps are triangular and directed upwards. The moths have a fore wing length of five to eight millimeters. The wings are predominantly black with scales. The veins R 3 and R 4 are petiolate on the forewings. The cross vein of the cell is only weakly developed on the fore and hind wings. The frenulum in males and females consists of a single bristle and the retinaculum (frenulum abutment) of the males does not have a hook-shaped extension. The antennae of the males are thicker than those of the females. The genital apparatus of the males has a divided gnathos and a noticeably enlarged vinculum . The valves are dorso basally provided with a serrated sclerotization .
distribution
The representatives of the genus are native to the Palearctic , Oriental , Afrotropic and Australis and mainly inhabit hot and dry regions.
