Scientific name
Heliothelinae
Blackbird , 1961

The heliothelinae are a subfamily of butterflies from the family of Crambiden (Crambidae).

features

The corpus bursae of the females is equipped with a conspicuous, inwardly directed spine. In addition, the corpus bursae does not have the appendix bursae (diverticulum) present in most species of Scopariinae . The Heliothelinae, like the Crambinae and the Glaphyrinae, have a pect, a so-called hair comb. This consists of a series of hair-like scales that arise on the hind wing below the cell on the trunk of the cubital vein. Many species resemble small owl butterflies.

distribution

The representatives of the subfamily occur on the continents of the Old World and in Australia.

biology

The species of the Heliothelini tribe are diurnal and colonize hot and dry habitats. The species (Hoploscopini) found in the tropical regions of Australia are nocturnal.

Systematics

The genus Heliothela was originally established in the Hercynidae (= Odontiinae ) family . Hampson moved them to the Pyraustinae subfamily in 1899. After genital morphology played a major role in the systematics of butterflies, Amsel established the tribe Heliothelini in 1961 . The species of the genus Heliothela differ from the other Pyraustinae, which normally have no gnathos, by the two-part gnathos of the males. Amsel continued to regard the Heliothelini and Scopariini as separate groups within the Pyraustinae. Leraut later placed the genus Heliothela in the subfamily Scopariinae. Minet finally raised the tribe Heliothelini to a subfamily in 1982, separating them from the Scopariinae.

The subfamily Heliothelinae currently consists of five genera with a total of 49 species. Heliothela wulfeniana is the only species of the subfamily that also occurs in Europe. The species list is based on the Globiz database.
