The light brown ruff ( Manda mandibularis , syn .: Acrognathus mandibularis ) is a beetle from the family of the ruff (Staphylinidae). It is the only species of the genus Manda in Europe.

features

The beetles reach a body length of 6 to 8 millimeters and have a rust-red body color, the top of the body barely shines. The pronotum is almost square, has an abbreviated, point-free center line and a short longitudinal bulge on both sides of the center. The wings are slightly wider than the pronotum. The sensors have three separate, enlarged end links.

Occurrence and way of life

The species is distributed from southern northern Europe across central Europe to southern Europe and then east to Siberia . The species is mainly found at the edge of water under rotting plant material, in detritus and under stones in the bank mud. The imagines swarm evening often wet meadows and are attracted by artificial light sources. They can be found in April and May and from August to October. The species is not common but can be found in large numbers during floods .
