The light cylinder diaper snail ( Truncatellina claustralis ), also known as the small cylinder diaper snail , is a species of the family of diaper snails (Vertiginidae) from the suborder of land snails (Stylommatophora).

features

The shell of the Hellen cylinder diaper snail is 1.5 to 1.8 mm high and 0.75 mm wide. It has six strongly arched turns, which are separated from each other by a deep seam. The last turn is slightly flattened on the outside, which makes the turn appear slightly shouldered. The housing is light horn yellow. The surface is silky and shiny and covered with fine strips of growth. The mouth is pointed-ovoid. The edge of the mouth is enlarged and reinforced with lips, particularly at the spindle and basal edges. Three “teeth” (parietal, columellar, palatal) protrude into the mouth. In the frontal view, only the first two are visible. The palatal tooth sits deeper in the mouth. It is visible from behind as a detached, white structure through the transparent housing.

Similar species

The shell of the light cylinder diaper snail is similar to the shell of the southern cylinder diaper snail ( Truncatellina callicratis ), but it is smaller and slimmer.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The range of the species is highly fragmented and stretches from eastern Spain, France, Switzerland, northern Italy, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, southern Poland, Hungary, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, Bulgaria to the Ukraine, the Caucasus and Asia Minor. In the Alps, Spain and Bulgaria it rises up to 1000 m above sea level. The species also occurred in northern Germany in the Pleistocene .

The species prefers dry slopes on limestone rocks between scree, typically in Artemisia and Helianthemum corridors. In the Alps it is also found on limestone rubble on meadows exposed to the south.

Taxonomy

The taxon was first described by Vinzenz Maria Gredler in 1856 as Pupa claustralis . Today it is generally recognized as belonging to the genus Truncatellina . Synonyms are Pupa claustralis var. Anodus Gredler, 1856, Pupa clavella Reinhardt, 1877, Pupa (Isthmia) claustralis Gredl. var. corcyrensis O. Boettger, 1883 and Pupa (Isthmia) salurnensis Reinhardt, 1877.

Danger

In Germany the species is lost or extinct, the last record dates from 1911. In Austria and Switzerland the species is considered endangered ( Welter-Schultes ).
