Hellmut Hager

Hellmut Wilhelm Hager (born March 27, 1926 in Berlin ; † November 10, 2015 in State College (Pennsylvania) ) was a German art historian .

Hager received his doctorate in 1959 from the University of Bonn with a thesis on The Beginnings of the Italian Altarpiece . From 1959 to 1963 he was an assistant at the Bibliotheca Hertziana , the scientific library for Italian art in Rome . In 1968 he taught for one semester at Pennsylvania State University , University Park. In 1971 he became professor of art history there and since 1972 headed the faculty of art history. In 1978 he was appointed a member of Penn State's Institute for the Arts and Humanities . In 1993 he became a member of the Accademia di San Luca and in 1994 he was awarded the title of Evan Pugh Professor of the University. In 1996 he stepped down from the head of the faculty, and in 2001 he retired.

Hager taught German and Italian architecture of the Baroque and Rococo . A special focus of his research was on the work of the Italian architect Carlo Fontana . Hager initiated the series of publications Papers in Art History from The Pennsylvania State University .
