Life

Hellmut Handl was the first son of the state school inspector Hans Handl and his wife Grete. He completed his school days in St. Pölten . After finishing school, he began studying medicine in Vienna . The outbreak of the Second World War made his studies more difficult and under great pressure he had to complete his studies in a minimum of time, otherwise military service threatened. Due to the war, he received his doctorate in Berlin in 1941. From 1941 to 1945 he worked as a hospital doctor in Russia and France. After the Second World War, Hellmut Handl was able to return to his homeland and settled in Vienna. After marrying Gertrude Kalisch in 1951, he laid the foundation stone for a surgical practice in 1953 that is still in existence today. His son was born on December 28, 1953. For many years he worked as a primary physician in the St. Josef Hospital in Vienna-Hietzing . He published numerous studies and also performed the first aesthetic operations.

Hellmut Handl was an enthusiastic rider and so he moved to Litschau, Lower Austria, at the end of the 1960s. There he lived on the lake promenade at Herrensee . A few years later he bought a farmhouse threatened by decay in Schönau near Litschau and began his artistic work. Hellmut Handl played a key role in the renovation of the Catholic parish church of St. Michael and was also the artistic designer of the lower church (Credo chapel). He worked artistically well into old age and was very interested in astronomy, which influenced many of his works.

Artistic creation

His artistic work focused primarily on the region around Litschau. He created a representation of St. Nepomuk on the banks of the Reissbach in Schönau, consisting of a granite stone on which the iron contours of Johannes Nepomuk are attached. Hellmut Handl designed the altar of the parish church of St. Michael and worked on numerous restorations of the parish church. One of his depictions of Litschau also hangs in the municipal council chamber of Litschau.
