Helmar Härtel

Helmar Härtel (born May 28, 1942 in Breslau ) is a German librarian , codicologist and binding researcher . He was director of the Herzog August Library in Wolfenbüttel .

Life

Härtel studied history, Latin and theology from 1962 to 1968 at the Georg-August University in Göttingen and at King's College London . He received his doctorate in 1969 in Göttingen with Hermann Heimpel on Lollardic teaching elements in the 14th and 15th centuries . From 1974 to 2007 he was a scientific librarian at the Herzog August Library and from 1996 to 2007 head of the department for manuscripts, incunabula and special collections.

His work focuses on studies of medieval manuscripts, the library history of the Herzog August Library and the history of medieval libraries in Lower Saxony .

During his activity at the Herzog August Bibliothek, an extensive collection of cover rubbings was made under his direction , which is systematically indexed in the cover database and made available on the Internet.
