Helmar Meinel

Helmar Oswin Meinel (born March 9, 1928 in Wernitzgrün ) is a German journalist and satirist.

biography

Meinel wrote his first newspaper article as a 14-year-old boarding school student. After the war ( anti-aircraft helper in Berlin, labor service on the Eastern Front, flag squire in the air force ) he bridged the period of collapse in 1945 as a lumberjack and drummer in a rural dance band. After graduating from high school, he was a village school teacher for a year. In 1948 he began his journalistic career with stations in Dresden, West Berlin and Düsseldorf. He has lived in Cologne since 1954, where he was a reporter, local director and local political commentator for the NRZ (Neue Rhein Zeitung) until 1968 and then for almost two decades he was the chief news editor of the Kölnische Rundschau / Bonner Rundschau. In retirement he worked as a freelance writer for the contemporary witness portal “One Day” for the news magazine Der Spiegel and Satiriker. In a series of interviews he was a. the first German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer (1964), the film icon Marlene Dietrich (1963) and the American film producer Walt Disney (1959) questions and answers. With his almost 6,000 daily articles and glosses , some of which he wrote under the pseudonym “ Jabbek ” (medieval mocking figure on Cologne's town hall tower), he is committed to the tradition of classic German satire. Meinel is the owner of the Kölschen " Kallendresser " medal.
