Helmut Alexander (born July 30, 1928 in Mannheim ; † December 3, 2009 in Brühl ) was a German experimental physicist and professor at the University of Cologne . He worked in the field of semiconductor physics .

Alexander grew up in a Protestant rectory . After the Second World War he studied at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz , where he received his diploma in 1957 . He went after the completion of the Max Planck Institute in Stuttgart , where he "Plastic deformation of germanium - single crystals " with Werner Köster and Peter Haasen doctorate . He went with Haasen to the Georg August University in Göttingen , where he set up a working group in the field of semiconductor physics at his chair. In 1966, Alexander received a call to the University of Cologne, which he accepted in 1968.

The focus of his work was on dislocations and crystal defects in semiconductors, in particular germanium, silicon and compound semiconductors, as well as plastic deformations of semiconductors.

The “Helmut Alexander Prize for the best conference contribution by a young scientist”, named after him, has been awarded since 2002.
