Werner Zoege von Manteuffel
Werner Friedrich Maximilian von Manteuffel Zoege (born July 1, jul. / 13. July 1857 greg. In Määri , Väike-Maarja , Governorate of Estonia ; † 14. March 1926 in Tallinn ) was a Baltic German medical surgeon and surgeon general ( Kindralmajor meedik ) of the Estonian Army. He was the first to call for sterilized gloves to be used during operations.
Zoege von Manteuffel's parents were Hermann Gustav von Zoege Manteuffel (1826–1899) and Berta Wilhelmine Henriette Parrot (1825–1878), the daughter of Friedrich Parrot . Like his grandfather, he studied at the Medical Faculty of the University of Dorpat , where he received his doctorate in 1886. From 1886 to 1890 he was an assistant in the surgical clinic in Dorpat under Eduard Georg von Wahl . He qualified as a lecturer in surgery in 1889 and became an associate professor in 1899 and a full professor in 1905. 1901–1903 he participated in the encyclopedia of surgery by Emil Theodor Kocher and Fritz de Quervain .
Despite his German ancestry, he was the personal physician of the Russian Tsar Nikolai II . In 1918 he moved to Reval ( Tallinn ) and was a volunteer military doctor in the Tallinn Hospital in the Estonian War of Liberation 1918–1920. He was awarded the Freedom Cross for his services . In 1925 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .
Werner Zoege von Manteuffel is known for his work on angiosclerotic gangrene . Since in the past silk or cotton gloves were worn during operations, which, as experiments by Kümmell, Fürbringer, Sänger, and Reinecke showed, were impossible to sterilize, in 1897 he recommended rubber gloves in surgical practice .
Under Zoege von Manteuffel's direction , the Devil's Bridge ( Kuradisild in Estonian ) was built in 1913, on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the Romanov tsarist dynasty, near the Engels Bridge , which should actually be called the English Bridge .
