Eduard Georg von Wahl (born February 19 July / March 3,  1833 greg. In Vatla , then rural municipality Karuse , today rural municipality Lääneranna , Estonia ; † January 17 July / January 29,  1890 greg. In Tartu ) was a Baltic German Mediciners .

Live and act

Eduard von Wahl first attended the private educational establishment Birkenruh near the Livonian Wenden . From 1851 he studied mineralogy , natural sciences and medicine at the University of Dorpat . In 1859 von Wahl received his doctorate as Dr. med. He then continued his education in Berlin and Paris before settling in Saint Petersburg as a private doctor in 1860 , but also working as a surgeon in hospitals. From 1867 to 1876 he was head of the surgical department of the Oldenburg Children's Hospital.

Eduard von Wahl was appointed to the chair for state medicine at the University of Dorpat in 1876. He donated a property in Dorpat , which he had acquired with private funds, to the university , which he and his colleagues - despite numerous state and social opposition - converted into a psychiatric clinic in 1877 . In 1878 he was appointed professor of surgery. Later von Wahl also became head of the surgical clinic in Dorpat.

In addition to his specialty, von Wahl campaigned for the fight against leprosy , venereal and mental diseases , both in medicine and in the field of public education. Further research was directed to forensic medicine . From 1881 to 1885 was von Wahl Rector of the University of Dorpat .

In December 1889, Eduard von Wahl was so seriously injured in a traffic accident that he died of the consequences a few days later. His estate is now in the library of the University of Tartu.
