Karuse was first mentioned as Cozzo in 1218. Karuse was officially named as a parish in 1267 under the name Karissen . It is one of the oldest parishes in what is now Estonia. From 1242 to 1561 the area belonged mainly to the Order of the Sword Brothers , first to the Commander of the Leal , then to the Commander of Pernau .

church

The construction of St. Margaret's Church in Karuse began as early as the second half of the 13th century under the rule of the order master Otto von Lutterberg († 1270). Characteristic of the stone building, which was erected as a fortified church like the church in Hanila , were the cross vaults and a semi-built-in tower. It was later rebuilt several times, especially in 1858/59. Today's west tower dates from 1895, replacing the earlier, free-standing bell tower. The single-nave church is now subordinate to the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church (EELK).

Important works of art preserved inside are the font from the 13th century, the pulpit by Christian Ackermann (1697), a chandelier from the 16th century and the altar from 1787. The organ dates from 1866.

In addition, some trapezoidal tombstones from the 13th century have been preserved. The master of the order Otto von Lutterberg himself, who died on February 16, 1270 in the battle against the Lithuanians on the frozen Baltic Sea near Karuse, is probably buried in the church . The church is now on the territory of the neighboring village of Kinksi .

graveyard

There are numerous stone crosses from the 13th to 17th centuries in the village's cemetery. There is also the historic burial chapel of the noble Baltic German family Wistinghausen .

railway station

The station Karuse since closure of the railway line between Rapla and Virtsu 1968 no longer in operation. Today there is a small museum in the historical building.
