Metsküla (German Metsküll ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural municipality of Lääneranna in Pärnu County (until 2017: rural municipality of Lihula in Lääne County ).

Description and history

The Näärikivid on the Baltic Sea beach of Metsküla

The place has 51 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011).

The village was laid out in 1480. In 1514 it is documented under the name Jummellmark . In 1565 it was called Sthor Degerskoo . In 1798 it is recorded as Stordirskog-Metkülla .

Boulders

A forest area stretches to the west, south and east of the village. In the north, Metsküla borders on the Bay of Matsalu ( Matsalu laht ). There are two large boulders , the so-called Näärikivid . They were named after the Nääri talu farm of the same name . The boulders and other stones have been under state protection since 1937.

From the village center, near the beach, a nature trail leads past the boulders to the western village of Saastna on the peninsula of the same name ( Saastna poolsaar ).

Dendrarium

At Metsküla on the Kägi farm ( Kägi talu ) there is a test dendrarium made from 45 pear trees , forty of which have survived. They grow up to twelve meters high.
