Kõmsi is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural municipality of Lääneranna in Pärnu County in Estonia . Until 2017, Kõmsi was the main town and administrative seat of the rural community Hanila ( Hanila vald ), which was in Lääne County .

Population and location

Ruins of the Orthodox Church

The place has 135 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011). It is ten kilometers northeast of the Virtsu port . The place houses a kindergarten and a primary school as well as a community hall and a library.

Near the center is situated on a field of the boulder Soomadise rändrahn . It has been under state protection since 1964. Its circumference is 17 m.

Orthodox Church

As part of the Russification of Estonia , an Orthodox parish was founded in 1884. Until 1978 there was an Orthodox church with its cemetery in what is now the Uue-Virtsu district. The church of the Nativity, built in 1889 by the architect K. Nyman, is now in ruins. The services of the Estonian Apostolic Orthodox Church are held today in the parish hall.

Burial sites

Two hundred meters from the church are two Tarand tombs from the Iron Age. Next to it is a burial ground for cremations from the 11th to 13th centuries.
