Vatla (German Wattel ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural municipality Lääneranna in Pärnu County (until 2017: rural municipality Hanila in Lääne County ) in Estonia .

Population and location

The place has 158 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011). It is located 43 kilometers southeast of Haapsalu . The area of ​​the village is twelve square kilometers.

Historic stable and carriage house

In 1320 who sold German Order under the Livonian Order Master Gerhard von Jork the village to the Cistercian - Monastery in Padise . From 1402 the area was owned by the Lihula nunnery . In 1582 the local estate passed into private ownership.

The two-storey mansion in the style of early classicism with its high roof was built in the first quarter of the 19th century under the Baltic German nobleman Otto von Rosen, who took over the Vatla estate in 1807. The utility rooms were located on the lower ground floor; the first floor was mainly used for representation purposes. The wall paintings in particular were splendidly worked out. A special feature is the gray-tones frieze with a Roman triumphal theme in the great hall as well as the lord's bedroom with a mantle chimney that resembles a grotto and the walls of which are painted with exotic, southern plants.

The village school has been located in the manor house since 1923. The manor's granary was converted into a cultural center in the 1950s. The stable and carriage house has been a sports hall since 1998.

The manor complex is surrounded by a park of almost twenty hectares, which is under nature protection. The large bat population there is a specialty .

Sons and daughters of the place

The most famous son of Vatla is the Baltic German doctor Eduard Georg von Wahl (1833–1890), who was born in Vatla.
