Lihula ( Lihula vald ) is a former rural community in Lääne County in the west of the Republic of Estonia . In 2017 Lihula was incorporated into the rural community of Lääneranna in Pärnu County .
Description and history
The rural community had an area of 384 km². 2,497 inhabitants lived there (as of January 1, 2013).
Lihula (German Leal ) was first mentioned in 1211. In 1220 the Swedish King Johann Sverkersson conquered the Lihula fortress. From 1234 to 1251 the place was the center of the diocese of Ösel-Wiek . In 1581 Lihula was conquered again by Sweden. Over 90% of the population fell victim to a plague epidemic in 1710/11. Only in the second half of the 19th century did the community begin to rise again.
Settlements
In addition to the main town, the town Lihula , belonged to the rural community of the villages Alaküla , Aruküla , Hälvati , Järise , Jõeääre , Keemu , Kelu , Kirbla , Kirikuküla , Kloostri , Kunila , Laulepa , Lautna , Liustemäe , Matsalu , Meelva , Metsküla , Mõisimaa , Nurma , Pagasi , Parivere , Peanse , Penijõe , Petaaluse , Poanse , Rannu , Rootsi , Rumba , Saastna , Seira , Seli , Soovälja , Tuhu , Tuudi , Uluste , Vagivere , Valuste , Vanamõisa , Võhma and Võigaste .
Attractions
The ruins of the former bishop's castle and the manor house of Lihula were worth seeing. It was built in the 1820s in the classicism style with a monumental portico . Since 1995 it has housed the rural community's historical museum.
