Helmut Arndt (diplomat)

Helmut Arndt (born January 18, 1933 in Berlin ; † February 19, 2016 in Basel ) was a German diplomat.

Life

Helmut Arndt studied law and history at the universities of Heidelberg, Hamburg, Berlin and Paris. He put the first and second jur. State examination and was awarded a Dr. iur. PhD.

In 1962 he entered the service of the Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Germany with assignments in Bonn, Tehran, Khartoum, Baghdad, Vientiane and as Consul General in Toronto, Bordeaux, Geneva and Shanghai. In the mid-1970s he was a. a. Counselor and representative of the ambassador in Khartoum and as a lecturer in the Legation Council and representative of the head of the Consequences of War unit : questions arising from war and occupation, legal status of foreign armed forces in the Federal Republic and the Bundeswehr abroad, foreign debts, confiscated foreign assets, reparations, civil servant consequences of war in the Foreign Office . From 1978 to 1983 he was Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bordeaux and then Counselor and representative of the Ambassador in Baghdad.

Helmut Arndt was Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Germany in Vientiane, Laos (1988–1991) and in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (1994–1999).

He was honorary chairman of the German-Lao Society (DLG).
