Helmut Engel (theologian)

Helmut Engel SJ (born May 13, 1940 in Wesel ; † August 31, 2020 in Edingen-Neckarhausen ) was a German Jesuit and theologian .

Life

He entered the Society of Jesus in 1959. He was ordained a priest in 1969 and began his first stay at the Germanicum (1970–74) as a study moderator. During this time he obtained a licentiate at the Pontificio Istituto Biblico and began working on his doctorate. In 1977 he moved to the Sankt Georgen seminary, where, in addition to teaching at the Philosophical-Theological University of Sankt Georgen (and from 1988 to 2000 also at the University of Philosophy in Munich ), he took on the role of a course moderator for the priestly candidates. In 1983 he was on the faculty Sankt Georgen habilitation and 1985 appointed professor of Introduction to the Holy Scripture and exegesis of the Old Testament. From 2000 to 2006 he was rector of the university. At the end of 2006, Engel returned to the Germanicum as prefect of studies and to work on the Gregoriana and the Biblicum as a visiting professor ( Professor invitatus ). Since 2018 he lived in the Mannheim Jesuit community (most recently in Edingen-Neckarhausen)
