Helmut Engel (art historian)
Helmut Engel (born May 2, 1935 in Northeim , † September 19, 2019 in Berlin ) was a German art historian and monument conservator . From 1972 to 2000 he was the state curator of Berlin.
Life
Helmut Engel studied art history at the University of Göttingen and received his doctorate there in 1964 with a dissertation on a building history topic. Afterwards he worked in the field of monument preservation in Lower Saxony . In 1966 he was appointed curator for the Hildesheim administrative district . In 1972 he was appointed the first state curator in Berlin. He campaigned for a monument protection law for Berlin, which was then passed in 1977. Until his retirement in 2000, Engel was head of the Supreme Monument Protection Authority in Berlin. Engel was the managing director of the Berlin Monument Protection Foundation and a member of the board of trustees of the Ernst Freiberger Foundation .
He was an honorary professor for cityscape maintenance at the Art History Institute of the Free University of Berlin .
