Helmut Fischer (swimmer)

Helmut Fischer (born January 29, 1911 in Bremerhaven , † February 29, 1996 in Bremen ) was a German swimmer and Olympic participant. He started for the Bremen Swimming Club (BSV) in the Bremen Swimming Association.

Helmut Fischer won the German 100 m freestyle championship five times in a row - in 1935 , 1936 , 1937 , 1938 and 1939 .

At the European Championships in Magdeburg in 1934 he won the silver medal in 59.8 seconds, just behind the Hungarian Ferenc Csik (gold in 59.7 seconds) and ahead of his compatriot Otto Wille (bronze in 1: 01.2 minutes)

In 1936, Fischer set a German record in the 100 m crawl swimming with a time of 57.9 seconds. This best performance lasted for 21 years.

At the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin , he achieved two fifth places:

  • over 100 m freestyle in 59.3 seconds. With a repetition of his lead performance of 57.9 seconds, Fischer would have come into the medal ranks. Gold went to the Hungarian Ferenc Csik in 57.6 seconds.
  • with the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay (cast: Werner Plath , Wolfgang Heimlich , Hermann Heibel and Helmut Fischer) in 9: 19.0 minutes. Japan won gold in the world record time of 8: 51.5 minutes.

In March 1938, Fischer swam with the BSV club relay together with Eduard Askamp , Hermann Heibel and Hans Freese in Bremen's Hanse-Bad, the then world record time of 4: 03.6 minutes.
