Helmut Freis

Helmut Freis (born July 29, 1935 in Merchweiler ; † August 3, 2002 in Sulzbach ) was a German ancient historian and epigraphist .

From 1955 he studied history and classical philology with Jacques Moreau at Saarland University , passed the 1st state examination in history and Latin in Saarbrücken in February 1961 and was also given the first comprehensive study in Saarbrücken on July 9, 1962 the Cohortes urbanae and the grade summa cum laude for Dr. phil. PhD. After working in school he took on a permanent teaching position at the University of Saarland in the "Ancient History" department from 1966 and was retired as academic director in 2000 .

In addition to the Greco-Roman world and the Roman Empire, the focus of Freis' numerous works was the history of the Saar-Moselle region, which was then populated by mediomatricians and Treverians .
