course

The Sulzbach arises from the confluence of the Ruhbach from the left and the Moorbach from the right in the Sulzbach district of Altenwald . It drains the Saar coal forest and follows a partly underground, piped course from Sulzbach. It finally flows into the Saar from the right at an altitude of about 194 m .

Renaturation

In the course of the urbanization in Dudweiler and the associated construction of the Sulzbachtalstraße, large sections of the Sulzbach were channeled and straightened, partly underground, partly open . Old cadastral plans show the former partly meandering course of the brook. The channeling in concrete bowls deprived the water of its connection to nature, which meant that the stream could not experience any natural purification and often carried unpleasant smells with it. In the event of heavy rain, there was no alternative for the water masses, which caused the stream to rise quickly.

The Sulzbach was renatured in several stages. To this end, measures were taken in Dudweiler in 2008. In the community of Sulzbach, the starting shot was given in July 2014 by a grant notification from the Environment Minister Reinhold Jost . The measures were carried out by RAG Montan Immobilien GmbH .

In the course of 2017, the Sulzbach in the area of the Salinenpark (Stadtpark in Sulzbach) was renatured over a length of approx. 1.2 km and made the focus of the park. This serves as an ecological replacement measure for the planned renovation of the nearby Maybach mine dump. This will also mean retention areas are created for flood protection.

During the first section of this renaturation, which was completed on September 20, 2017, among other things, concrete shells and 5000 cubic meters of earth were removed.
