Helmut Kirchgässner (born October 8, 1938 ) is a German sports scientist and university professor .

Life

Kirchgässner studied from 1960 at the German University of Physical Culture (DHfK) in Leipzig , from 1968 he was employed as a research assistant at the DHfK. The topic of his doctoral thesis, completed in 1968, was "The sport-specific psychological characteristics of boxers and their development under competitive training conditions". In 1971 he and Kurt Wagner published the study book "Boxing: Instructions for Basic Training". In 1984 he became a university lecturer and in 1990 a full professor of movement and training science. After Gerhard Lehmann, Kirchgässner was the last rector of the DHfK before it was wound up after reunification.

In June 1990 Kirchgässner was appointed the founding dean of the sports science faculty of the University of Leipzig , worked on the establishment of the institute, which started operations in 1993 and held the office of dean initially until 1996 and then again from 1999 to 2002. From 1993 to 1997 he was also editor-in-chief of the publication series “Leipzig Sports Science Contributions”. Until his retirement in 2003 he was head of the Institute for Movement and Exercise Science in Sports at the Sports Science Faculty of the University of Leipzig. In July 2003, when Leipzig applied for the 2012 Summer Olympics, he was appointed Olympic Commissioner at the University of Leipzig. On the often discussed topic of a connection between the DHfK and doping, Kirchgässner emphasized in 2003 that establishing such a connection was “unrealistic and wrong” from his point of view. The subject of doping was "absolutely taboo for reasons of secrecy" at the DHfK.

Kirchgässner's focus on sports science was in the field of combat sports, throwing and pushing disciplines in athletics , especially javelin throwing and athletics sprint , and he also dealt extensively with the history of sports science in Leipzig. From 1993 to 1997 he headed a research project on the topic of "Possibilities of sports therapy in water with children with cardiovascular disease", in 1972 he published an article on the topic of "Investigations of political-ideological and sport-related attitudes".
