Helmut Mödlhammer (born November 26, 1951 in Salzburg ) is an Austrian journalist and politician. From 1999 to 2017 he was President of the Austrian Association of Municipalities and was mayor of the Salzburg municipality of Hallwang .

biography

Mödlhammer grew up in Koppl near Salzburg . His father Felix Mödlhammer was the owner of the Alt-Jodl-Gut in Koppl.

After attending the one-class elementary school in Guggenthal and the Academic Gymnasium in Salzburg , he graduated from high school in June 1969. He then did his military service with reserve officer training until October 1970. Mödlhammer then studied journalism and political science without a degree.

His entry into the Salzburger Volkszeitung (SVZ) as editor in 1972 was followed by an appointment as head of the service and as local manager in 1975. After that, in 1978 he moved to the Salzburger Volksblatt as editor-in-chief. After returning to SVZ as deputy editor-in-chief and publishing coordinator in 1980, he worked as editor-in-chief from 1994 until SVZ was sold on March 31, 2005.

Helmut Mödlhammer married a carpenter from Hallwang and moved to his father-in-law's carpentry business. With his wife Irmgard, Mödlhammer has two daughters and a son.

Helmut Mödlhammer became a member of the Hallwang municipality council in 1984. After two years he was elected mayor in 1986. Mödlhammer was President of the Salzburg Association of Municipalities from 1992 and President of the Association of Austrian Municipalities from 1999 . In February 2007 he was again confirmed in his office as President of the Association of Municipalities. In this election, the term of office of the President was extended from four to five years. In March 2017, Alfred Riedl succeeded him as President of the Austrian Association of Municipalities.

In addition, the Salzburg ÖVP politician was a member of the Salzburg state parliament from 1995 to 1999 , a member of the ORF board of trustees from 1997 to 2002 and a member of the Austria Convention from 2003 to 2005 .
