Helmut Rieche (born February 7, 1943 in Bernburg (Saale) ) is a German local politician ( Christian Democratic Union of Germany , CDU). From 1990 to 2008 he was mayor and lord mayor of the city of Bernburg (Saale).

Career

Helmut Rieche was born in Bernburg / Saale in 1943 and belongs in the broadest sense to the Rieche family from Bernburg, which also includes the chemist Alfred Rieche and the entrepreneur Walter Rieche and their father Karl Louis Berthold Rieche as the founders of the pharmaceutical factory “Dr. A. Rieche & Co. GmbH ”belonged.

Helmut Rieche grew up in Bernburg, attended the “Franz Mehring” elementary school here from 1949 to 1957 and then the secondary school (now Carolinum grammar school ), which he graduated from high school in 1961 .

Rieche initially studied theology at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena from 1961 , but had to end his studies prematurely in 1962 for political reasons. From 1962 to 1964 he therefore attended the company school of the district directorate for post and telecommunications and obtained a skilled worker qualification as a "telecommunications mechanic". His application to study electrical engineering was rejected because of his "strong ties to the church". 1964–1965 he did 18-month military service in the National People's Army (NVA).

From 1965 to 1968 he worked at the Bernburg cement works , at the same time he began distance learning from 1965 at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena and graduated in 1970 with a degree in measurement, control and regulation technology (MSR).

His professional years as an engineer in industry followed immediately after his training. From 1968 to 1969 he was initially involved in the construction of the new Bernburg cement plant as a BMSR group leader in the Dessau cement plant. From 1969 to 1970 he then moved to the Rheinsberg nuclear power plant as an engineer for thermal measuring devices. From 1970 to 1973 he worked in the preheater and boiler construction in Köthen as a tender engineer for heating plants, from 1973 to 1987 he worked as an investment engineer and energetic engineer in the wire drawing shop in Bernburg . For the period from 1987 to 1990 he moved to Serumwerk Bernburg, where he worked as a maintenance engineer.

Rieche lives in his hometown of Bernburg.

Since 1968 he was a member of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU in the GDR), in 1990 he became a member of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU).

In the course of the German reunification process , Rieche was elected Mayor of Bernburg on June 7, 1990 by the then city council. He was the first freely elected mayor of the city after 57 years of political dictatorship.

After his first term of office he was re-elected for the first time on June 12, 1994, now as Lord Mayor . On May 20, 2001, Rieche was re-elected for the second time. He held the post until his retirement in 2008. On March 1, 2008, his successor Henry Schütze took office .
