Helmut Schmalen

Helmut Schmalen (born April 10, 1944 in Würselen ; † October 30, 2002 ) was a German economist and holder of the chair for business administration with a focus on marketing and trade at the University of Passau .

Life

Schmalen was born in Würselen in 1944. He was a student at the Couven-Gymnasium in Aachen. He then studied business administration in Cologne and economics in Kiel from 1963 to 1968 and graduated with a degree in economics. During his studies, Schmalen received a scholarship from the Cusanuswerk. From 1969 to 1977 he was a research assistant at the Institute for Business Administration at the University of Kiel with Klaus Brockhoff and Walter Braun . In 1971 he was awarded a doctorate degree with the text Individual Career Choice on the Basis of Economic Analyzes - A Presentation of this Behavior and its Significance with regard to Long-Term Labor Market Development. sc. pol. PhD. 1976 followed in Kiel also the habilitation (marketing mix for new consumer goods (Wiesbaden 1979)) with the venia legendi for business administration; also in 1977 he was awarded the Pieroth Prize for his work on problems of company profit sharing based on the loan account model . In 1977 he was offered a professorship for general business administration at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Hamburg, which he turned down.

In 1978 Schmalen was appointed to the chair for business administration with a focus on marketing and trade at the University of Passau, which he held until his death. In 1985 he turned down an offer to Tübingen and in 1990 to Düsseldorf. Since 1993, Schmalen has been a member of the supervisory board of the Dresden Academy for Further Education and the Saxony SWA Academy for Further Education. Under his leadership, with the support of the Foreign Office, German-language courses in business administration were created in 1993 and 1994 at the Budapest University of Economics and the State University for Management in Moscow. The Budapest University of Economics awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1996.

Schmalen's focus was on research into price and communication management, innovation and diffusion research, buyer behavior, tourism research and retail marketing. His book Fundamentals and Problems of Business Administration (Cologne 1980) established itself in over 13 editions as one of the standard works for the introduction to business administration and has been translated into Russian, Bulgarian and Hungarian. In 2002 Schmalen died unexpectedly. In 2003 the University of Passau organized a memorial symposium in his honor with the participation of Horst Albach , Klaus Brockhoff and Hans Reischl .
