Klaus Brockhoff (born October 16, 1939 in Koblenz ) is a German economist .

Life

Klaus Brockhoff studied economics at the University of Bonn . After graduating in 1962, he became a research assistant at Horst Albach's chair . In 1965 he received his doctorate with a thesis on company growth and product range changes. A year later, he completed his degree as a graduate in business administration at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster . From 1967 to 1968 he went to the University of California, Berkeley as a visiting scholar on a habilitation grant from the German Research Foundation . After his habilitation with a thesis on R&D project and program planning, also at the University of Bonn, he first worked at the research and consulting institute Battelle , where he soon became head of a larger unit. In 1970 he was offered a chair for business administration at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel , where he worked for almost 30 years until 1999. At first he was responsible for general business administration in Kiel . After the introduction of the business administration course in 1978 and the creation of functionally specialized chairs, he took over a chair for marketing economics in order to switch to the newly created chair for technology and innovation management in 1989 , the first of its kind in Germany. From 1999 to 2004 he was rector and holder of the chair for corporate policy at WHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management in Vallendar. Since April 1, 2005, the day before he retired, he held an honorary professorship there . From 2005 he was a member of the board of the WHU Foundation, from 2007 to 2018 as deputy chairman of the board.

Act

Klaus Brockhoff is not only an important researcher, but also known for his contributions to science management. From 1981 to 1983 he was Chairman of the Marketing Commission in the Association of University Lecturers for Business Administration . From 1989 to 1991 he served as chairman of the association. Due to his diverse science policy activities, he became a member of the Science Council from 1991 to 1994 . From 1997 to 2007 he was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Volkswagen Foundation , in recent years Deputy Chairman and Head of the Assets Advisory Board. From 2008 to 2016 he was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Esche Schümann Commichau Foundation . He was also a member of various supervisory boards , such as B. the data center Schleswig-Holstein GmbH, the Metro AG or the Steuler Industriewerke GmbH (later Steuler Holding GmbH) or advisory boards, like at Brain Capital subsidiaries for student financing. Brockhoff has advised a large number of government institutions as well as large and small companies, in some cases also through reports or in expert groups. Brockhoff's research results are reflected in 19 books / independent publications and in over 300 articles in German and international journals and manuals. Brockhoff received his doctorate from over 60 students and produced five academic students, each of whom hold chairs at German universities: Helmut Schmalen at the University of Passau († 2002), Sönke Albers ( University of Kiel / Kühne Logistics University), Ursula Weisenfeld ( University of Lüneburg ), Holger Ernst ( WHU ) and Thorsten Teichert ( University of Hamburg ).

Honors

In 1991 Brockhoff was awarded the Max Planck Research Prize. In 1993 he was honored with the Karl Heinz Beckurts Prize for his life's work in innovation management . In 1997 Brockhoff was elected to the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and 2000 to the European Academy of Sciences and Arts . The Acatech Academy of Engineering followed . The Association of University Lecturers for Business Administration appointed him an honorary member.

His scientific achievements were honored with an honorary doctorate from the University of Bern in 2003. In 2009 he was recognized as a Leader in Technology Management by the US Portland International Conference on Management of Engineering and Technology (PICMET; ' Portland International Conference on the Management of Engineering and Technology') . On the occasion of his resignation as Deputy Chairman of the WHU Foundation, the supporting foundation of WHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management , he received an honorary doctorate from the private business school WHU in November 2018.
