Holger Ernst (business economist)

Holger Ernst (born March 25, 1966 in Weidenau (Siegen) ) is a German business economist . He holds the chair for technology and innovation management at WHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management . He is also visiting professor at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University , Evanston (Illinois) , USA. In addition to heading the chair for technology and innovation management, Ernst is director of the Bio-Pharma Management Center at WHU.

Life

Ernst studied business administration at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel (CAU), Germany , and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign . He started his academic career as a doctoral student in the Graduate College Business Administration for Technology and Innovation at the University of Kiel . In the winter semester 1995/1996, he was there by Klaus Brockhoff and Jürgen Hauschildt with a thesis on patent information for strategic planning of research and development PhD . Ernst completed his habilitation in the winter semester 2000/2001, also in Kiel, with a thesis on the subject of success factors for new products . In January 2001, Ernst received the license to teach business administration ( Venia legendi ) from the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences at Kiel University. Since March 2001 he has held the newly created chair for business administration, particularly technology and innovation management, at WHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management .

Ernst's research interests lie in the areas of strategy, innovation, new product development and intellectual property.

Ernst has u. a. Published in the following journals: Creativity and Innovation Management, Journal of Product Innovation Management, Journal of Engineering and Technology Management, Journal of Marketing, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, MIT Sloan Management Review, Organization Studies, Research Policy, R&D Management, Zeitschrift für Betriebswirtschaft and journal for business research.

In the Handelsblatt Betriebswirte Ranking 2009, which has analyzed the research performance of 2100 business economists in Germany, Austria and German-speaking Switzerland since 2005, he was ranked 16. For his teaching he was awarded three times with a so-called Best Teacher Award for his teaching achievements excellent. In addition, Ernst has received the following awards for his scientific achievements:

• First prize for scientific work by the Industrial Research Foundation (1996)
• Best Paper Award from the Association of University Lecturers for Business Administration (1999)
• Best Paper Award Innovation Management of the EBS University for Economics and Law (2007); together with Ulrich Lichtenthaler
• Best Paper Award MIT Sloan Management Review 2010 (Robert Beckhard Memorial Prize; together with Martin Högl and Frank Siebdradt)

His most famous student to date is Ulrich Lichtenthaler . In June 2012 Ernst was elected to the board of the Association of University Lecturers for Business Administration . He should take up the office in January 2013 and then be responsible for the Young Talent and International Affairs department, within which the VHB offers workshops, conferences and a doctoral program. On November 7, 2012, however, Ernst declared in a letter to the VHB, referring to the revocation of already published articles, that he would not take up this office.

Revocation of already published articles

Since 2012, a total of six publications that were co-authored by Holger Ernst have been withdrawn at the initiative of the authors and the editors of various scientific journals. The journals Strategic Management Journal , Research Policy , Organization Science and Journal of Product Innovation Management were affected . Errors in the statistical presentation of results and a lack of references to similar, previously published work were given as reasons for the depublication. In four of the six cases the co-author Ulrich Lichtenthaler took responsibility for these deficiencies. Two other publications, in which Lichtenthaler was not involved, were withdrawn on the initiative of Ernst and his co-authors. WHU examined the allegations of serious scientific misconduct in an investigative committee. According to a press release from WHU on September 21, 2015, the commission came to the conclusion that Ernst cannot be blamed for any responsibility through active participation in or knowledge of the misconduct of Lichtenthaler in his habilitation thesis. Likewise, Ernst is not accused of grossly neglecting his duty to supervise Lichtenthaler or employees of his chair. The committee complained, however, that Ernst, as a co-author of Lichtenthaler, had not adequately checked his work for errors, which constituted "serious scientific misconduct". By failing to do so, he shares responsibility for the errors that occurred in joint publications. In contrast to the Lichtenthaler case, whose teaching qualification was revoked by WHU, WHU Rector Markus Rudolf merely reprimanded Ernst's behavior.
