Ulrich Lichtenthaler

Ulrich Lichtenthaler (* 1978 in Karlsruhe ) is a German economist and management consultant.

Life

Ulrich Lichtenthaler studied European economics at the Otto Friedrich University of Bamberg and the University of Granada . He completed his studies with a degree in business administration Univ. (European degree) and with a European Master of Business Sciences certificate. He received his doctorate in 2006 with Holger Ernst at the Chair of Technology and Innovation Management at WHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management on the subject of Leveraging Knowledge Assets: Success Factors of External Technology Commercialization . Lichtenthaler completed his habilitation cumulatively at the end of 2009, also at WHU. He then worked for a few months as a visiting professor at the Technical University of Berlin and in February 2009 accepted a call to the newly created Chair for Innovation and Organization at WHU.

In the spring semester of 2011, Lichtenthaler accepted a position at the University of Mannheim , where he succeeded Alfred Kieser as professor for general business administration and organization.

Lichtenthaler left the university and left his chair on March 31, 2015. He then worked for a medium-sized management consultancy .

In 2018 he was appointed Professor of Management and Entrepreneurship at the International School of Management in Cologne.

Lichtenthaler is the author of the textbook Integrated Intelligence and has a. a. Published in the Academy of Management Journal , Organization Science or Strategic Management Journal .

His research interests include also manages artificial intelligence and digital transformation , the organizational theory , the innovation research , the patent research and the Strategic Management . Within his empirical research , he mainly uses quantitative methods.

In 2007 he received the Best Paper Award Innovation Management, endowed with € 2,500, for his work, which was presented by EBS in cooperation with the Microforum High Technology Park in Wendelsheim . In 2009 he received the young talent award from the Association of University Lecturers for Business Administration (VHB). In the Handelsblatt Betriebswirte Ranking 2009, which has analyzed the research performance of 2,100 business economists in Germany, Austria and German-speaking Switzerland since 2005, it achieved second place in terms of current research performance, first place in the ranking of researchers under 40 years of age and - although only at the time 30 years old - 17th place in the ranking of the life's work of all active scientists. His research achievements received attention in the business press. The Handelsblatt described Lichtenthaler in a portrait as a result of his outstanding ranking placements: The boy who does everything right .

Lichtenthaler's commitment to teaching and training was honored in 2011 with the Fachschaftslehrpreis of the University of Mannheim.

Revocation of already published articles and revocation of teaching qualifications

At the beginning of 2012, a group of 20 scientists became aware of irregularities in Lichtenthaler's publications. This group then looked at 50 of Lichtenthaler's publications. In addition to a lack of references to similar own publications and content-related contradictions between publications based on the same data sets, statistical errors in information on the significance of results were pointed out. As a result, fifteen articles by Lichtenthaler were withdrawn by June 2014. Inquiry commissions have been set up at WHU and the University of Mannheim.

On September 11, 2013, Lichtenthaler was revoked the teaching qualification obtained at WHU by the Senate of WHU because “an essential requirement for the awarding of the teaching qualification was not met”. In October 2014, the University of Mannheim announced that Lichtenthaler would leave the university on March 31, 2015 at his own request.
