Helmut Schmid (typographer)

Helmut Schmid (born February 1, 1942 in Ferlach , Austria ; † July 2, 2018 in Osaka , Japan ) was one of the most important typographers of the 20th century and a staunch supporter of Swiss typography .

Professional activities

After his training as a typesetter in Germany, Helmut Schmid studied at the Allgemeine Gewerbeschule Basel under Emil Ruder , Kurt Hauert and Robert Büchler as a fellow student of Karl Gerstner . Since then he has worked in Düsseldorf , West Berlin and Stockholm (covers for "Grafisk Revy"). After Montreal (Ernst Roch Design) and Vancouver , he worked in Osaka , Japan , at NIA. Since 1977 Helmut Schmid lived and worked as a freelance designer in Osaka. From 2000 to 2012 he taught typography at Kobe Design University, and from 2005 to 2006 at Hongik University (Seoul, Korea). Since 1988 he has been a member of AGI ( Alliance Graphique Internationale ).

One of his most important works was the printed information material that he produced between 1973 and 1976 for the Federal Government at the time with Federal Chancellors Willy Brandt and Helmut Schmidt . In 1976 he designed the campaign logo for the SPD . In Japan he developed the basic visual concepts for IPSA Cosmetics, Flower Boutique Masiyak and Feinkost Ruban d'Or. He designed product identities for the beverages Pocari Sweat , Fibe-Mini and Java Tea for the company Otsuka; Savon d'Or and HG for Shiseido Fine Toiletry. He designed various magazine covers and wrote articles for magazines such as "IDEA", "Typographische Monatsblätter" and "Grafisk Revy". In his books “typography today” and “der Weg nach Basel” he kept the awareness of typographic quality alive and advocated design with attitude.

In 1980 Helmut Schmid published the volume “typography today” as a special issue for IDEA magazine. The 160-page edition presents pioneering designers from all over the world. In 2015 the revised and expanded edition was published as a hardcover with now 200 pages. The Chinese edition has been available since 2007 and the Korean edition since 2010.

From 1992 onwards, Helmut Schmid developed his “typographical reflections” in order to document political, creative and personal events. The series includes 13 issues with 14 numbers. Schmid's publication "Der Weg nach Basel" is number 4.

The thematically structured exhibition “helmut schmid. design is attitude - design is attitude ”showed important works in the original and comments on his work. The traveling exhibition opened on November 19, 2006 in Seoul , South Korea.
