Helmut Schuster (entrepreneur)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Helmut Andreas Schuster (born April 25, 1932 in Vienna ; † March 31, 2018 there ) was an Austrian entrepreneur.

Life

After studying at the Vienna University of Economics and Business (Dkfm., PhD: 1955), the civil servant's son completed practical years at various companies, including in 1955 at the Varta company .

In 1957, Helmut Schuster joined IBM Austria, where he took over the position of sales director in 1968. 1974/75 he headed IBM Europe in the former Soviet Union and in 1977 became Deputy General Director of IBM Austria. In 1978 he took the opportunity to become a member of the supervisory board of the Hirtenberger cartridge factory .

In 1980, Schuster finally left IBM after 23 years of belonging to the group and in 1981, together with his brother Gerhard Schuster , acquired the company Ankerbrot , which had been in economic turmoil and was still operating under the name Vereinigte Nahrungsmittel Industrie AG at that time . From 1983 to 1997 Helmut Schuster was CEO of the acquired company and made the company into the domestic industry leader within a short time. Subsequently, he developed Ankerbrot with over 2,600 employees and 2.2 billion schillings (around 160 million euros) in sales into the most modern bakery in Europe.

When Hirtenberger AG had to apply for compensation as a result of the collapse of the Assmann company empire in 1995 and Giro Credit as the main bank of Hirtenberger AG became the de facto owner of the company, Giro Credit appointed Helmut Schuster as chairman of the supervisory board of Hirtenberger AG. In the same year, Schuster installed a new management team made up of experienced Hirtenberger employees and initiated the turnaround of the company. Finally, the following year, in 1996, Helmut Schuster acquired the entire shares in Hirtenberger AG from Giro Credit. Schuster apparently financed this purchase by selling anchor bread to the German company Müller-Brot . In total, the Schuster brothers sold 74% of Ankerbrot AG to Müller-Brot in 1997 and the remaining shares six years later to the German industrialist Klaus Ostendorf .

The total turnover of the Hirtenberger Group climbed under the owner Helmut Schuster from approx. 41 million euros in 1994 to approx. 120 million euros in 2009. Hirtenberger AG achieved growth under Schuster, especially in the civilian business. In 2002, deliveries to the automotive industry already accounted for more than 60 percent of group sales. In 2015, Komptech from Frohnleiten (Styria) of about the same size was taken over.

Helmut Schuster died on March 31, 2018 in Vienna.
