Helmut Victor Muhsam , born as Helmut Victor Mühsam (born August 12, 1914 in Berlin ; died 1997 ) was an Austrian-Israeli statistician and demographer.

Life

Helmut Victor Mühsam was a son of the film critic Kurt Mühsam and the art historian Alice Freymark . His eldest sister Ruth Marton became an actress and writer, the other sister Gerd Muehsam a librarian. Laboriously attended the Collège Français in Berlin and began studying physics and mathematics at the Technical University of Berlin . After the handover of power to the National Socialists , he had to give up studying in Germany and in 1934 went to Switzerland to the Université de Genève , where he received his doctorate in physics in 1937. He met Brouria Feldman, who came from Jerusalem , and moved with her to Palestine , where they married. You have a daughter. Brouria Feldman-Muhsam made a scientific career as an entomologist at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem . Muhsam worked from 1938 to 1944 as a statistician for the Jewish National Council (JNC) and from 1944 to 1948 for the British Mandate Administration.

After the establishment of the State of Israel, Muhsam was chief statistician in the administration from 1948 to 1952. He also worked as a statistician at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. 1957/58 he worked for the United Nations in New York, 1961/62 he was visiting professor for sociology and public health at the University of California at Berkeley . In 1969 he became a lecturer at the Institute for Demography and Statistics at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he was department head. Muhsam was temporarily vice-president of the Union Internationale pour l'Etude Scientifique de la Population , he was a member of the American Statistical Association and the International Biometric Society . From 1980 to 1985 he participated in the work of the ethics committee of the International Statistical Institute . Muhsam was the author of a number of articles in scientific journals.
