Helmut Vogel (physicist)

Helmut Vogel (* 1929 in Stargard in Pomerania ; † February 21, 1997 in Tenerife ) was a German physicist . He is best known as the editor of the textbook Gerthsen Physik , whose 12th to 20th editions (1974–1999) he significantly revised and expanded.

Life

After his youth in Neustrelitz / Mecklenburg , Helmut Vogel studied at the Humboldt University in Berlin . In addition to physics, he also chose various other subjects, but had to give up. a. because he was locked up in a Stasi prison for “a few semesters” because of his agitation for free elections . He resumed his physics studies at the Technical University of Munich , did his doctorate in 1960 on a topic of solid-state physics and completed his habilitation in 1965 with a biophysical thesis. In 1966 he went to Los Angeles to study cell physics for two more years. After returning to Europe, he worked for several years in the field of molecular genetics at an institute of the CNRS in Montpellier . In 1978 he accepted a position at the Technical University of Munich, where he taught physics until his retirement in 1994. In 1997 Helmut Vogel died unexpectedly of a heart attack while hiking in the mountains in Tenerife.
