Helmut Zimmermann (zoologist)

Helmut Zimmermann (born March 22, 1926 in Danzig ) is a German architect, conservationist and herpetologist.

Life

After enrolling in architecture at the Technical University of Danzig (1944) and doing military service, Helmut Zimmermann learned the mason trade in 1946 and studied civil engineering and architecture at the Stuttgart State Building School (Hochschule für Technik) with a state examination (Dipl.-Ing. (FH)) in 1954 Then he founded his own architecture office and worked as a freelance architect until 1988. As early as 1974 he made many study trips to the tropics and devoted himself to zoology (herpetology) and nature conservation, often with the help of electrotechnical methods (acoustics, video, surveying). He published around 200 popular and scientific works, generated many exhibitions (e.g. the Malagasy booth at the EXPO 2000 world exhibition ), CDs, video and television films (ZDF, 3SAT, ARTE and TV-Madagasikara (11/12/2013)) . He is a member (also advisory board and reviewer) of several scientific and similar societies, partly to this day.

Act

As a freelance architect, he designed and built single and multi-family houses, movie theaters, industrial, sales and bank buildings in and around Ludwigsburg and Stuttgart from 1954 to 1988 (e.g. the bank of the Deutsche Bundesbahn in Stuttgart DVKB in 1966).

Since 1974 Zimmermann has dealt with the breeding, conservation and protection of the tropical anuric fauna, in particular with the colorful poison dart frogs of the Dendrobatidae family . He undertook three study trips to Equador between 1984 and 1988 (partly funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG)) and published many research results on their behavior. In 1988 he and his daughter Elke Zimmermann described a new species ( Dendrobates variabilis ) and a new genus (Phobobates) of this family and contributed to new findings on the evolution of the anuric family Dendrobatidae.

In 1988 Helmut Zimmermann founded the first working group of the German Society for Herpetology and Terrarium Science (DGHT) together with Elke Zimmermann and Karl-Heinz Jungfer (DGHT-AG-ANUREN) with a focus on biotope protection (approx. 120 national and international experts). In 1997 the foundation “Nature and Species Conservation in the Tropics” (NAT) was established together with Peter Wüst. 1994–2002 Zimmermann developed studies on the inclusion of the golden frog Mantella aurantiaca in Appendix II of the Washington Convention on Endangered Species (with the support of the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation, Bonn) and submitted a further application with the Madagascan government for protection of the 8400 hectare moor rainforest area Torotorofotsy near Andasibe to designate it as the 4th wetland in Madagascar. It was included in the UNESCO RAMSAR International List in February 2005 . In 2000 he received the invitation from the Madagascan Environment Ministry to design the Madagascar exhibition stand for the world exhibition " EXPO 2000 " in Hanover with the presentation of his NAT project. In 2001 he carried out investigations with an application (based on the cooperation agreements between the NAT Foundation and the University of Antananarivo and the Direction Générale des Eaux et Forets, Madagascar) for the protection of the “dragon tree rainforest area Maromiza”. The application was approved as a nature reserve in 2001; this was followed by the inauguration by the German ambassador to Madagascar, Behr (pilot project to implement the RIO 1992 convention). At Wilhelma in Stuttgart , Zimmermann presented the projects of the NAT Foundation from June 19 to September 22, 2002 as an exhibition “Madagascar - Island of Tropical Treasures”, in Madagascar 2003 in an exhibition in the national library of the capital Antananarivo . TV films about the work of NAT by ZDF, Arte and 3SAT in Germany and TV-Madagasikara were made in 2003.

Awards and grants

  • The National Order of Madagascar, Ordre National de la République de Madagascar in the rank of knight, was awarded to Zimmermann for the protection and preservation of the unique Malagasy biodiversity on March 31, 2004 by the President of Madagascar and presented by the Senate President in the Malagasy embassy in Falkensee / Berlin.
  • Financial support was provided by Conservation International (CI), the Baden-Württemberg Development Cooperation Foundation (SEZ) and many other sponsors.
